What do you tell your family during and after a time of adversity? Generally, the truth is all that they want to know. If there is significant trauma, hiding it will only lead to further complications. Most people want the simple truth and to learn a possible way forward.
In the order of things, there are more important things to spend money on than on your business. When you have been through a drought, flood, fire or health pandemic, your priorities change. Take the time to understand this new set of preferences and the implications on others.
Making the family right should be your priority; flowers and chocolates are great, but as you recover, they will be expecting much more from you in the way of your future intentions. It takes time and a lot of discussion over an extended period to adjust your family entirely.
When a family member has a severe problem, it is understandable that you would feel afraid and even helpless and, a lot of additional questions run through your mind.
- Why is this loved one in such a situation?
- What do I do to help them?
- How can I cope with them being out of action?
- What does the future hold for our relationship?
Family relationships are important to everyone. But, unfortunately, the family members are the first to suffer and the ones who suffer the most and are unable to help. So if someone is sad and depressed all the time, it’s time to get help from your doctor.
It is essential to protect a family member from the pressures of the moment; otherwise, they will freeze up on you when you need their love and support most. The last thing we all want is a breakdown in family relationships. I have often seen people criticise others for their mistakes and situations, only to see them in the same circumstances sometime later. Remember, but for the grace of God go I.
Even the young ones can understand more than you think. However, they need special attention and be encouraged to bring their concerns to you for further explanation.
Should a family member not be trusted to handle information discretely or become even more distressed with the truth, it is probably better to tell them only what they need to know. Otherwise, it can cause more trouble than they and anyone else can handle. Instead, identify their frustrations, and relieve their fears and give them hope.
Adversity gives you a real opportunity to become creative and innovative in how you and your business helps family, friends, and employees adapt to a better lifestyle and a better future.
“You will find it challenging to find a person who can cope with and rise above adversity with a negative mindset towards a business case to determine the best way to a better future”.
“Adaptability could well be the only real form of control over adversity you will ever have”. Peter Sergeant
