Judgements propagate misinformation

It might be unfair, but people will make judgements.

Are incorrect judgements about your business being made?

Judgements about you and your business are always being made. In fact, many people will think they know more about your business than you do .Your image in business and your customers experience is important. You need customers and prospects to make positive judgements about your business. Right or wrong, your customers and prospects will make snap judgements about you and your business.

Unless you can afford to lose customers, you can’t afford to project an unprofessional image

  • What does your business look like?
  • Will it still look the same next year?
  • What do you want it to look like?
  • Are customers giving you feedback?
  • What are your customer’s experiences like?

Common marketing mistakes could inadvertently tell customers and prospects you’re not really serious about your business. Break the mould, right here, right now, consequently opening the door to a better business.

We make calls on trustworthiness almost instantly

Even if we cannot consciously see a person’s face, our brain is able to make a snap decision about how trustworthy they are. According to a new study published in the Journal of Neuroscience,  http://www.jneurosci.org/. The brain immediately determines how trustworthy a face is before it’s fully perceived, which supports the fact that we make very fast judgments about people.

Researchers at Dartmouth College and New York University showed a group of participants photos of real people’s faces. As well as computer-generated faces that were meant to look either trustworthy or untrustworthy. It’s been shown in the past that people generally think that faces with high inner eyebrows and prominent cheekbones are more trustworthy. And the opposite features are untrustworthy, which the researchers were able to confirm.

In the second part of their experiment, the researchers showed a separate group of participants the same images.  But for only for about 30 milliseconds while they were in a brain scanner. They then did something called “backwards masking”. This consists of showing a participant an irrelevant image or “mask” immediately after quickly showing them a face. The procedure makes the brain incapable of processing the face.

Even though the patients were not able to process the faces, their brains did. The researchers focused on activity in the amygdala, a part of the brain responsible for social and emotional behaviour. They found that specific areas of the amygdala were activated based on judgments of trustworthiness or non-trustworthiness. This, the researchers conclude, is evidence that our brains make judgments of people before we even process who they are or what they look like.

Keep in mind the next time you’re meeting someone new. No pressure.

Judgements are often made about the little things

It might seem unfair but people will make judgements based on seemingly trivial things. However, modern marketing demands careful attention to information technology, mobility and social media.

The importance of a logo

Legitimate companies have logos. These days, there is no excuse for not having some graphical representation of your business. Online graphics make logo design an easy option, it doesn’t have to be fancy, just unique. A well-designed logo will allow quick identification of your business and build an image on which to make judgements.

A website is essential

Many businesses still have no online presence. Does your business really exist without a website? How will prospects find you? As most people Google their wants and needs a website is essential. Without one, they make judgements and quickly move on. A website is a must-have in today’s competitive marketplace.

Is your website mobile compatible

If people are unable to access your website on their mobile device negative judgements will be made and they will move on. More than 50% of people access the Internet with their mobile device, particularly younger people. Mobility is important tin the new work environment, http://goo.gl/wwhT0i

Having your own domain name is essential

Your “free” website does not give you your own domain name (i.e., www.yourbusinessname.com) you’ll have to pay for it. It’s a minor expense with so many good, inexpensive hosting options. Without your own domain name, your clients and prospects will often make negative judgements about the viability of your business.

The need for an email addresses with your domain name

Are you still emailing clients from your free email account? If so, people may make judgements about you being more a hobby rather than a serious business. Use the free email account for your personal life, not for your business. Obtaining a proper email address, such as name@yourbusinessname.com, is easy and inexpensive.

The importance of an email signature

Your email signature should be a standard closing  at the end of every email you send. It should include your name, business name, and contact information. Other necessary information such as your company tagline, logo, a link to your website, links to your social media profiles, are also invaluable.

Maintain a system to manage business contacts

When a business starts to grow  and everybody becomes busy, appointments can be missed. Promises are not kept and customers and prospects can fall through the cracks. To take advantage of every marketing and relationship-building opportunity, you need a system to manage all your business contacts. These systems are called Contact Relationship Management (CRM). They are a must have for the serious business, if positive judgements are to be made.

Judgements about your business are being made on social media

The necessity of a business page on social media

A Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+ and Twitter business page is no longer a fad or even a luxury. They are a necessity as it helps customers and prospects make informed business judgements. With over 350 million members, LinkedIn is the top business social networking site. Your LinkedIn company pages are being listed in Google’s and LinkedIn’s search engines. This allows people to follow your company’s updates and gives you a place to promote services and products. If you don’t have company pages, you’re missing a lot of advantages.

Business blogs are important

Businesses that blog have 50%+ more website visitors than businesses that don’t blog. While blogging requires time and resources, you can’t afford not to as businesses that regularly blog generate more leads.

The costs involved should be another important expense line in your Profit and Loss accounts. If you want customers to make more positive judgements about your business and what you offer, then the more you spend the better the results will be.

Maintaining a professional image requires an investment of time and resources. It’s simply a cost of doing business these days. By addressing these marketing issues, you’ll be setting the foundation for better judgments being made about your business in this modern era.

Quotable quotes

“Judge tenderly, if you must. There is usually a side you have not heard, a story you know nothing about, and a battle waged that you are not having to fight”. Traci Lea LaRussa

“Failure is not a single, cataclysmic event. You don’t fail overnight. Instead, failure is a few errors in judgement, repeated every day”. Jim Rohn
