Selling your ideas and opportunities.

Selling is a learned skill.

In my years in the selling world, I was a bit of a renegade. I saw things that needed to change, and I felt it was the right thing to do to prepare my case to get them changed. In the early part of my career, there was just this one little problem: I wasn’t all that good at persuading others to go my way. It often felt like pushing a heavy boulder up a steep hill.

The minute we are born, we learn how to sell. We know how to scream out if we want something or need attention. Most people never nurture this skill, but they still expect to get what they want and need. We should have kept learning how to be better communicators and listeners.

Unfortunately, most people think sales is ‘getting someone to buy.’  But that’s just wrong. If you want to make more sales and increase your revenue, the sooner you internalise how sales are about leadership, the sooner you’ll be signing up new ideal customers and doing it consistently.

How have you been exposed to selling?

It is easy to sell your ideas if you know your product well, are mindful of the customer’s wants and needs, do the work, and then ask for the order. He would give me excellent practical sales training over the next eighteen months, setting the foundations to build on for the rest of my life.

If you’re serious about growing your business, know that getting your ideas across is paramount. Everyone says to become fearless, but no one tells you how to overcome it. Or that you should never knock your competitors, but learn how to present your ideas better.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re spinning your wheels, overwhelmed, procrastinating, or unsure how to move forward, you’re not alone. I’d prepare my reasoning to sell my idea in a proper way that felt right.

As I finish my proposals, I often think, “This is good. If I were my customer, boss, peer, or employee, I’d say yes to this”. I have learned to listen to my rhythms and trust myself. That’s when everything changes. It’s about freeing yourself from overwhelm, procrastination, and the stress of not knowing everything or having enough time.

Start doing things differently.

“It’s not the person selling the best farming equipment who wins the most farmers; it’s the person who knows the farmers, their businesses, their problems, frustrations, wants and needs”. Peter Sergeant

“People only tend to buy what they want, not what they need. Focus on selling them what they want, and then deliver what they need”. Peter Sergeant
