Start with what you have.

If you don’t make a start with what you have “to cross the bridge”, you will never cross it.

You will succeed more by examining what already exists in the region and building from there rather than focusing most of your effort on hunting for significant opportunities elsewhere.

When you start chasing external opportunities, you have responsibilities and can quickly lose focus. Your priority is no longer on the local people because new opportunities tend to come first. At the same time, action orientation is a crucial requirement for success, but the question for most people is still, “When and how do to start”?

You must strive to develop local entrepreneurs and encourage investment by home-grown, home-based, and lifestyle businesses. It is the only way most communities, towns and villages can feasibly integrate into the future global marketplace without a considerable investment.

As a prelude to developing strategies to move things forward, you might create Arts and Crafts and look at immediate improvements to current tourism activities. Perhaps you could offer free rent to arts and craftspeople to fill empty shops and add interest to the community. These people are renowned for attracting others to work with them in their industry.

Your next step should be to carefully consider the approaches you will take and how you might generate new ideas and opportunities.  With regional business, ad hoc approaches are usually just a flash in the pan. So, consider how you can help those businesses and non-profits already in the community, knowing that if you help them, they will probably want to help your organisation somehow.

Don’t fall into the trap of a marketing campaign to attract new businesses that will compete with existing ones. You will only alienate the existing companies. Any money is better spent on expanding the existing businesses that have already chosen to live and work in your community.

“The best start-up business idea matches your unique background, experience, and preferences with something people want and need. It’s about you and your customers, not“the ”idea” of a new business and where to start”. Peter Sergeant
