What to do when things don’t go your way?

Feeling frustrated, discouraged, or defeated is natural when things don’t go your way. However, how you respond to setbacks can significantly affect how quickly you recover, get back on track, and move forward.
Deal with your worries and fears.
The more unsettled the times, the more our fears and worried feelings become more persuasive. Fear triggers more than an immediate reaction when a natural disaster lingers, such as droughts, floods, and bushfires. A lifetime of anxiety comes to the surface, much of it stemming from the more recent COVID-19 pandemic and poor political leadership, which are powerful enough that it is hard for anything to override the worries and fear.
We are forced to adapt to its presence with denial or distraction. By ignoring your anxiety or doing something that takes your mind off it, you might find temporary relief. But is there something more permanent and effective?
The secret is to make conscious choices that cause fear to minimise because you no longer need it and have essential things to do. We have come a long way from the days of a fight-or-flight response. We have evolved to make it possible to choose how we react.
We must wake up and understand the realities of our situation. To make the right choices in anxious times, we must be conscious of what fear is doing to us. Fear is a form of stress, and you can choose to release stress anytime you want. To experience this, you only need to find a nice place to relax, think, and reflect on your situation and what you are trying to accomplish.
The first step is to take a moment to pause.
Emotional reactions like anger or disappointment can cloud your judgment. Deep breathing exercises help calm the mind and body, giving you space to think more clearly.
As you relax, you must recognise and accept your emotions rather than suppress them. Whether you’re upset, confused, or even angry, acknowledging those feelings allows you to process them and move forward.
Evaluate your options. Look at what you can do next. Is there an alternative path or a way to pivot your approach? Often, things don’t go our way because the current strategy isn’t working, but that doesn’t mean there’s no solution. In time, as wisdom becomes your inner reference point, your mind and attitude will override your worries and fears.
